Water Canyon Kiosks are DONE!![]() Huge shout out to our members Kevin Coleman and Cody Bengoa for branding our kiosks up in Water Canyon this past weekend. The kiosks were built by Gene Hunt and crew last year with help from a district grant. There are a total of 3 kiosks in the recreation area, all with various signage pertaining to the area. Now all 3 kiosks bear our Rotary Club of Winnemucca brand across the bottom board of each. We'd also like to thank Jesse See with Carwil for making our "branding" idea a reality and building the brands for us! What a great group of members we have! Thank you all so much for your hard work and dedication! |

Baby's First Book - District Matching grant projectFor our 2015-2016 District matching grant, we're promoting literacy in our community by providing every baby born at our local hospital with a bilingual English-Spanish book of nursery rhymes, along with a letter to parents explaining the importance of reading to children beginning at a very early age. Rotarians of Winnemucca Kay Eason, Tom Klein, and our club's Foundation Chair JoAnn Casalez worked hard to write the grant. Kay ordered the materials and many of our members helped to apply Rotary Club of Winnemucca book plates inside of and insert letters to parents in the books.
We would like to thank our Rotary District 5190, especially District Foundation Chair Vic Slaughter, for your assistance with the matching grant that made this community service project possible. Also, thank you to Nicole Maher at Humboldt General Hospital, and Rotary member Tina Perkinson for helping to coordinate the distribution of the books!

Inaugural Build Up our Food Bank eventFor our first ever Rotary Club of Winnemucca "Build Up our Food Bank" event, we had 7 teams participate in creating some amazing sculptures to give our local Food Bank a boost. Beginning Friday, October 9th, teams assembled their creations, then on Saturday our esteemed panel of judges decided on winners in the categories shown below. The public was invited to vote with a dollar per vote on Saturday at the Exhibit Hall, and during the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce's Hops & Grapes gathering where the winners were announced. On Sunday, local Boy Scout Troop 223 helped Rotarians and staff from the Winnemucca Food Bank fill their van and pickup with food used in the sculptures. We were able to donate 3,710 pounds and $381 to our local Food Bank in preparation for the upcoming holiday season!!! We thank all the businesses and volunteers who worked hard to make this event possible, especially Rotarians Amy Edwards, who coordinated the event, and Rhonda Coleman, who worked hard to encourage teams to participate and was involved in 3 teams herself! Summer Youth Conference InformationThinking of attending or sending your kids to a Rotary youth camp this summer? The District 5190 website has information on two upcoming camps that may be of interest: |
Rotary screens kids for vision problems
About 30 families availed themselves of the free service. According to Bengoa, "many" children were identified as having problems. The clinic was staffed by Rotary volunteers, who teamed up to administer a series of simple vision tests. After completing all tests, each student was interviewed and further tested by Bengoa. Rotary volunteers included Victoria Dupuis, Trina Kleintjes, Tom Klein, Mike Owens, Kay Eason, Bob Shaw, John Siegfried, Lee Ann Morrell, Bob Himmelreich, and Barbara Sealy. Bengoa and the Rotary Club hold vision screening clinics several times each year. The next is set for Nov. 17th, from 8:30 to noon, at the Winnemucca Grammar School. Click for more photos from yesterday's clinic. Or, visit the Vision Screening Image Gallery. |
Winnemucca Rotary Club Wins District Award for Literacy Project
At the recent Rotary District 5190 Rotary conference, the Rotary Club of Winnemucca was awarded the district "Literacy Project of the Year" for medium sized clubs in the 54 club district which spans northern Nevada and northern California. The Rotary Club of Winnemucca donated two hundred and eighty Literacy Kits for each child who participated in the annual Humboldt County School District Kindergarten registration held in April. Each incoming student received a pencil, paper, an eraser, a pencil sharpener, chalk and a chalkboard, scissors, glue, crayons, an alphabet sheet, play dough, a public library card application, Unifix cubes for counting, nursery rhyme coloring books, a book to read, and a bag to keep all of their things in. Teachers or administrators at each school explained to parents how to help their child hold a pencil, how to print their name, how to use the alphabet sheets, how to count with their children, and how important it is to read to their children. Using scissors and colors improves fine motor skills and eye hand coordination which is important for children who are learning to read and write when they reach school age. Reading to children and learning nursery rhymes helps children learn the cadence of reading and also teaches them some of the most used words in our language. The Rotary Club of Winnemucca is committed to making a difference for children in our community and wants parents and grandparents to know that it is never too early to read to a child. The larger a child’s vocabulary is when they begin school the better student they usually become. |

We are aiming high, at $50,000 that will form the match for a Community Development Block Grant application we have lodged with the City of Winnemucca.\
